Controversy Sparks Create Viral Traffic Fires!
Did You Know That Controversy Is A GREAT Traffic Generation Method?
For those who know me, you know that some of my marketing tactics can be a bit edgy. In fact they have been known to stir up a hornets nest or two.
Let me tell you a little secret, it’s totally by design. Let me give you a fantastic example of this.
First of all you should know that Diane Hochman is one of the key people who has influenced my business life. I consider her to be amongst the top marketers out here.
I learn something new from her just about every single day. I also agree with everything she say about 99 percent of the time…
That being said, the other day she posted a great video about relationship building. You can check out the video here…

Take a look at the comments. Without trying to sound offensive or disrespectful to one of my highly respected mentors. I made an opposing viewpoint.
Let’s face it, don’t we all get a little tired of the “great video” and “you rock” comments. I mean those are just expected when your a leading marketer in the industry but it can be rather Ho Humm…
So I went ahead an offered a different position. Keep in mind that I DO NOT disagree with Diane and rarely do.
Let me say it again… I DO NOT DISAGREE..
Ok , now that we have that out of the way. Look at what happened.
Tons of people began to chime in on the conversation. Many people even thought to themselves, who the heck is this guy and have visited my facebook page, visited my blog (this site, according to the stats had about an extra 123 visitors than usual from Facebook on this day) and even a few of them opted into my mailing list.
Some even are beginning to make videos offering their own perspectives on this commentary.
The point is this. You don’t have to always agree with everyone, and odds are that you won’t. Do not be afraid to post your thoughts. After all social media would be NO fun if everyone was the same and no one offered a unique perspective.
Now, I might have made some people a bit peeved at me, but that is just fine. They will get over it because ultimately they are going to end up with the same message of Loverage to create Leverage whether they get that message from me or from Diane Hochman is not all that relivant to me.
I have been known to take a grenade for the the cause in the past and will most likely take more in the future.
I hope you have a great week!
To Your success,
Scott Manesis

Standing Ovation, my friend.
Is it ethical to use this as a strategy? For instance, in this comment, could I accuse you of falsely coming across as someone who DISlikes Diane just to take a harmless (non-controversial) topic and potentially spark a raging social media riot to potentially driving traffic to my website?
But then I would come across as disagreeing with you – which I don’t..
Oh my.. this could get out of hand… but the standing ovation stands. I don’t recant. I love this aspect of ‘making your mark’.
Scott this is so great! I love your strategy!!! It makes online marketing FUN
Mia Davies
Paul,
Is it unethical? I don’t think so, if you notice in my comments I even alerted everyone that I was playing the devils advocate. I also made sure to point out how much I value Diane’s teachings and how much I respect here before going forward with the topic.
I mean we are all adults here. What is wrong with a little bit of discussion? It is a heated debate and topic that will be debated for years to come.
I have never been one to simply follow the party line and admit to even crossing the line once or twice. I am not perfect.
I am sure Diane is wise enough to see exactly what I did and what my intent was. As I mentioned I will take a hit if it benefits the greater good, in this instance Diane was certainly the greater good. I didn’t need to point that out
.
The old saying goes, it doesn’t matter if your getting good press or bad press as long as your getting some press.
That being said, I am sure it even allowed people to get to know Diane even better, as she certainly rebutted my comments with the poise and grace one would expect from someone of her caliber.
If anyones reputation got bruised in the process it was my own, but I knew that going in.:)
Scott
Mia,
Thanks for the comment. Hey it’s all good. You don’t have a party if there is no mixed nutts!
BTW I liked your video http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=107678982580210&ref=mf

Scott you have been playing with fire for a LOOOOONG time…you know how to handle the heat…
This IS NOT a beginners strategy…I would hate to see someone ruin a good reputation for the sake of a strategy.
It is all about being authentic and transparent. If the message is good and provides super value…fine. If not…if it is a traffic driving strategy that is as transparent as glass … well Google just might NOT be your friend. …
Diane was right…those “Is So and So A Scam” vids and adwords campaigns blew UP in alot of people’s faces and they are GONE now. Pity…some of them were really good people too. I wonder how their families feel today..???
From one Chef to another… play with fire ONLY if you have a bucket of ice water nearby … the blisters can leave scars that last a life time…
Rose,
You know me, I have started more than one fire in the past and even fanned the flames. Most times I can put out the fires though. I have gotten good at that.
Show me a chef that never burnt anything and I will show you a liar.
and Your right this technique is not for the week kneed that is for sure!
I might get a good butt chewing in the end, but see my other post on how to get a million dollars worth of training for free…LOL.
Keep in mind, I am pretty sure Diane knows exactly how I am by now, in fact she probably knows more about me than I know about myself, so it’s not like it came out of left field.
She is used to having to yell at me, and I am used to getting yelled at, so it works out. I end up stronger in the end.

Well that’s certainly an interesting strategy. I don’t think I’d be able to use it with any sort of feeling, unless I could actually see the other point of view.
You can’t effectively represent a standpoint if you don’t at least see it from there as well.
I just say that because I don’t think anyone should just run off and start trying to stir up controversy for the sake of traffic. (Not that you did that, just wonder what steps some people will take after reading about how effective it was…)
I have found value in much of your content and generally like your style, Scott. However there is already way too much stupidity on the internet to encourage the average Joe(or Jane) to play with fire.
Cheers!

Thanks for the great content and information. I am always going through the
internet
searching for good content and to also get ideas for my home based business web
sites
and future articles on the basic and general subject. Again, thanks for the
great content.
I will be coming back to review this site for more information in the near
future.
